DESCRIPTION:Pharmacology and Therapeutics Seminar\nDr. Paul Fernyhough\n\n
  Date: Friday\, January 13\, 2012\n Time: 12:00 noon\n Location: A229 Cho
wn Building\, Videolinked to St. Boniface Research Centre R1002\n\n Dr. P
aul Fernyhough\n Director of Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders\n Pr
ofessor - Departments of Pharmacology and Therapeutics & Physiology\n Uni
versity of Manitoba\n\n Topic: "Mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons in d
iabetes"\n\n Research Focus:\nDiabetic and Peripheral Neuropathies: Diabe
tic neuropathies are the\nCinderella of neurological diseases. The WHO in
forms us that by 2025\nthere will be 300 million sufferers from diabetes
worldwide - a figure\napproximately equal to the population of the USA. C
urrently close to 50%\ndiabetic patients develop some form of peripheral
nerve disease\, which can\nlead to loss of protective sensation and limb
amputation. The incidence is\nexpected to rise 10-fold in the next 10 yea
rs in First Nations peoples\nof Canada. There is no treatment. My group i
s\, therefore studying\npathogenetic mechanisms and potential drug target
 s. Key approaches\ninvolve identification of the cellular transduction of
  damage signals\n(neurotrophic deficits\, oxidative stress\, glucose stre
ss\, mitochondrial\ndysfunction) and failure of cellular protective mecha
 nisms.\n\nTechniques: cell culture\, confocal microscopy\, fluorescence i
maging\, neuronal plasmid transfection\, general biochemistry and pharmac
 ology.\n\nFor more information\, contact:\nKaren Donald\ndonald@cc.umanit
